The Pathways to Prosperity Partnership (P2P) will hold its first annual conference at the Minto Suite Hotel in Ottawa starting at 2:00 p.m. on November 15, 2013 and finishing at 1:00 p.m. on November 16, 2013.  The P2P conference directly follows CIC’s National Settlement Conference so that attendees at CIC’s event can stay on for an additional day and participate in the P2P conference.

Blocks of rooms have been reserved at both:

The two hotels are only one block apart.

The P2P conference will focus on four main topics:

(1) Agency of the Future: The P2P conference will examine the key components of the Agency of the Future project. These involve: a process for identifying new lines of business for the settlement sector; ensuring that promising practices in the new business areas are shared widely through an innovation cycle that supports agency change; and the construction of the institutional machinery and processes, co-led by Pathways to Prosperity, that will transmit information across agencies.

(2) Local Immigration Partnerships, Reseaux, and Other Place-Based Initiatives: The conference will examine the progress that LIPs and Reseaux have made in addressing various strategic objectives, with a view to offering guidance for new initiatives that are in the early stages of development. The focus will be on promising practices and strategies  for these practices  to be transferred elsewhere. Discussion will also focus on how research partnerships between the LIPs, Reseaux, and Pathways to Prosperity can be facilitated.

(3) Downstream Responses to Changing Selection Processes: The conference will explore various institutional responses required by changes in migration brought about by reconfiguration of the immigrant selection system. These include, critically, the role of settlement organizations and academic institutions pressed to respond to the needs of increasing numbers of international students; factors that affect student economic and social integration as they transition to permanent residency; possible contributions by employers and employment councils to immigrant absorption and integration; and the impact of overseas accreditation and new accreditation pathways on economic outcomes.

(4) Results of Settlement Outcomes Surveys: The conference will include a session at which the results of several settlement outcome surveys conducted in Canada over the last few years will be presented. These surveys provide important insights into the economic and social outcomes of recent immigrants, their settlement needs, and their utilization of services and information. Methodological challenges in conducting surveys of this nature will also be examined.

Within these topics, we will pay special attention to Francophone minorities outside of Quebec and to Northern and remote communities.

On the evening of November 15th, a reception and a poster session will be held to showcase the work of P2P members. Following this, at 8:00 PM, the P2P’s Quebec node will host a special, roundtable discussion of the Québec Charter of Values debate and what it portends for immigration both to Quebec and to the rest of Canada. A number of short presentations will help to get the discussion underway.

On November 16th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., a P2P Board of Directors meeting will be held, as well as a dedicated meeting for P2P student representatives.
