U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has escalated its battle with Harvard University by revoking the school’s ability to enroll foreign students, casting doubt on the futures of thousands of scholars, including hundreds of Canadians.The Department of Homeland Security said in a Thursday press release that Harvard has created an unsafe campus and permitted “pro-terrorist agitators” to harass and assault Jewish students. It said many of the “agitators” are foreign students. It also accused Harvard of hosting and training members of a Chinese paramilitary group that it says is “complicit in the Uyghur genocide.”

Près de trois mois après la réduction du nombre d’étudiants étrangers, Québec corrige légèrement le tir pour certains établissements, mais ne change pas en substance les restrictions. C’est ce qui se dégage d’un nouveau décret publié mercredi dans la Gazette officielle du Québec et qui vient modifier celui rendu public à la fin février. Au total, le nombre de certificats d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) qui pourront être décernés est rehaussé de 371 pour l’année qui s’étend du 26 février 2025 au 26 février 2026. Le CAQ est un document incontournable qui doit être obtenu préalablement à la demande de permis d’études auprès du fédéral.

L’avenir proche est un peu moins incertain pour l’aide juridique en immigration au bureau de Montréal et Laval : plusieurs des postes temporaires ont été renouvelés pour six mois. La prise de rendez-vous pour la clientèle immigrante, composée notamment de demandeurs d’asile, devrait reprendre sous peu en ligne et au téléphone. Quatre postes d’avocats — la moitié de l’équipe — ainsi que huit autres contrats liés à des postes connexes étaient menacés de ne pas être renouvelés, selon le Syndicat des avocats et avocates de l’aide juridique de Montréal et Laval-CSN.

Nova Scotia’s agriculture sector had more than 1,000 fewer workers in 2023 compared to seven years earlier, according to data recently released by Statistics Canada. This comes as the president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture said the province could face a shortage of about 2,600 farm workers by 2029. « A lot of our industry is impacted, but … horticulture and the fruit producers would be the two that are impacted the largest when there’s a labour shortage, » said Alicia King.
CBC News — Plans unveiled for newcomer housing in Old East Village as fundraising starts
London’s Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC) is hoping to start work this summer on a new apartment building in Old East Village that will be geared to newcomers. The 247-unit complex is earmarked to be built on the current site at 763-773 Dundas St., between Hewitt and Rectory streets, next to the Aeolian Hall. The one, two and three-bedroom units are being designed with a focus on new Canadians’ distinct needs, including affordability, stability, access to amenities and opportunities to meet new people.
City News — Quebec’s francization system not offering smooth integration for newcomers: French language commissioner
Quebec’s program for teaching French to new arrivals in their workplace doesn’t offer them a “realistic” change of success, says the province’s French language commissioner, Benoît Dubreuil. He made the remarks Wednesday, in presenting his 2024-2025 annual report, after tabling it in the National Assembly. Dubreuil suggests Francization Québec deploys standardized courses with measurable objectives and recommends employers be obliged to give workers more time to participate in the courses.
